Just how is PowerPoint used in business today?
Here at Eyeful we keep a close eye on PowerPoint usage in the corporate world and one of the ways we keep bang up to date is with our annual survey.
Our latest survey brought forward some results that, whilst not altogether surprising, were very concerning. Overall the survey highlighted how important PowerPoint is in today’s business world – but also showed just how misunderstood and misused it is.
As all would expect 95% of respondents’ businesses used PowerPoint and 30% of these people use it every single day. That just goes to show how ingrained into the business world PowerPoint is.
In the 95% of respondents who use PowerPoint 83% used it in face to face presentations. Take that alongside 73% of people presenting to customers and 72% to prospects you begin to see just how important a tool PowerPoint is in today’s customer facing world. PowerPoint is now the most important tool for any sales team.
How much really depends on a presentation? Well think about how much work goes into getting that meeting. Market research, cold calls, courting warm leads and then finally persuading the customer to have a meeting. All of that work culminates in this one presentation. This one presentation can justify all the hard work, or it could waste it. If you can see the value that the last piece of the jigsaw has then you begin to see how important it is.
Unfortunately some other statistics show how the potential of PowerPoint is let down by the users. A staggering 52% of the “owners” of the content within organisations have had no formal training on the product or on presenting. Coupled with an enormous 72% of people who have no formal process for updating their presentation we begin to see how under managed PowerPoint collateral is.
In our experience in order to harness the potential of PowerPoint you must understand how to get the most out of it. By updating your presentations regularly you can ensure you keep up with your market.
These figures show just how little care can be taken within a company for its PowerPoint presentations. If we take all these together the picture is pretty damning:
- 95% of businesses use PowerPoint.
- 30% of these organisations use it everyday.
- Take into account that 30 million presentations are given each day worldwide you begin to see the scale of the problem.
- But of those 30 million only 48% are given by presenters with any formal training & 72% haven’t been updated for a considerable amount of time quite often over a year.
When you look at the cold hard numbers it can be rather scary as the chances of you or I being forced to sit through one of these substandard presentations is extremely high.
Finally there is one finding from the survey that bears serious thought. 92% of our respondents said the one thing that makes the presentation is a good presenter. 67% also said that a good presentation is ruined by a bad presenter. Together these show just how important you, the presenter, is.
To realise the benefits of PowerPoint you must do two things:
- Make the most out the presentation.
- Make the most out of you – the presenter.
